Hurricane tracking is the scientific process of monitoring, analyzing, and predicting the path and intensity of tropical cyclones. For the public, this complex meteorological effort is distilled into our interactive hurricane tracking platform, which translates raw data from agencies like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) into actionable visual information.

When multiple storms are active, the playback synchronizes time across every system on the map, allowing users to compare trajectories and speeds in real time rather than relying on static snapshots.
  • Observed vs. Forecast Tracking & Custom Views: Platforms display both Observed (historical) track points and Forecast (projected) path nodes. Users can toggle their display between Path Only for a clean visual, or Path and Legend to view context alongside data.
  • Hover Tooltips in Local Time: Hovering over any storm node reveals precise, point-in-time metrics, including the storm’s Name, current Wind Speed (in knots), and Timestamp. To eliminate time zone confusion across different ocean basins, all timestamps automatically convert and display in the user's local timezone.
  • Standardized Severity Classification: Trackers utilize the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale to color-code storms, giving the public an instant summary of system intensity:
    • Tropical Depression/Storm: Developing cyclones with winds up to 73 mph.
    • Category 1–2 Hurricanes: Systems with dangerous winds capable of causing moderate to extensive damage.
    • Category 3–5 (Major Hurricanes): Systems with sustained winds of 111 mph or higher, capable of causing devastating to catastrophic destruction.
